A bit of history: from polo to the American style
Button-down collars, also known as "button-downs," originated in the world of sports , specifically in 19th-century British polo . Players complained that their shirt collars would flap in the wind while riding, which was annoying and unaerodynamic. To solve this problem, they began buttoning the collar points onto the shirt , and this iconic design was born.
Years later, Brooks Brothers introduced it to the United States as a sporty elegance. Since then, the button-down collar has become a men's wardrobe classic, especially in preppy-inspired or smart-casual looks.
What is it used for today?
Although we no longer play polo in a shirt (at least, not most of us!), the buttons on the collar still serve a useful purpose:
They keep the collar in place , especially when worn without a tie, preventing it from riding up or shifting.
They add structure to the outfit, making the shirt look more polished and neat.
They add a distinctive touch that blends the classic with the casual, perfect for smart casual or business casual styles.
When to choose a button-down shirt?
These types of shirts are ideal for those looking for versatility . You can wear them to work with chinos and a blazer, or pair them with jeans for a more relaxed look. However, in very formal or black-tie settings, it's best to opt for shirts without visible buttons at the collar, which allow for a cleaner look with a tie.
